Zarvan Content Transform for AlfrescoOverviewDocument imaging is an important component of any Enterprise Content Management (ECM) implementation. Document imaging deals with capture, processing, storage and publication of digitized and scanned documents. It facilitates business process automation and compliance by converting paper based documents into flexible electronic formats. Most scanned images are compressed using one of the CCITT FAX compression schemes. Among these the Fax Group 4 is more common because of its ability to compress pixel patterns in both horizontal and vertical directions.The newer JBIG2 compression was designed to take advantage of repeating symbols on a typical scanned document. By intelligently segmenting a page into character and graphics areas, applying algorithms that best deal with each type, categorizing symbols into similarity classes, applying advanced pattern matching algorithms and using adaptive template based arithmetic encoding, JBIG2 can compress scanned images by an additional order of magnetude compared with Fax G4 compression. JBIG2 compression of scanned images was made popular by the inclusion of JBIG2 filters in Adobe Acrobat 5. JBIG2 compressed scanned images can reduce storage overhead by a factor of 10 or more and decrease download times by a similar factor. Since most imaging systems deal with very large numbers of scanned documents, the saving in storage costs and ease of maintenance and on-line access times can be significant. Zarvan JBIG2 Engine is a modern implementation of both JBIG2 encoding and decoding standards written in portable C++ code. Also, Zarvan PDF Library supports efficient generation of linearized, secured PDF documents out of JBIG2 files or streams. By combining these two technologies, Zarvan has created a unique content transform that can seamlessly integrate with any existing installation of Alfresco. By automatically converting multi-page TIFF G4 scanned images to highly compressed, secured and linearized PDF documents, Zarvan extension can restore about 90% or more of the storage space used by scanned images.
